. the first pope to do so in nearly 600 years. pope benedict says he's stepping down because of his age and diminishing strength. tara moriarty joins us now from san francisco with more on this mornings stunning announcement. tara. >> reporter: the vatican confirming the pope will resign february 28th. we are here at st. mary's cathedral. it's right across the street from the arch diocese. we should mention pope benedict is the first to step down in nearly 600 years. the 85-year-old announced his decision in latin this morning during a meeting of vatican cardinals. he emphasized carrying out the duties of pope the leader of a billion roman catholics requires stamina. something he is running out of. after repeatedly examing my congress before god i came to my strength and age are no longer suited for the ministry. he went on to say that strength of mind and body are necessary. strength with which in the last few months has deteriorated me to the extent i had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. the last pope to resign was gregory in 1415 he did
